Down at the Grand Rapids DOC. Their between Athabasca and Fort Mac. It's a fair ways down river, but well worth the trip! (Between 4-5hrs of running.)

The closest boat launch is 30 mins from Athabasca(5mins from ALPAC) called poachers landing. The grand is 160miles from town and there are quite a few cabins and stop's on the way. You go through 4 set's of rapids getting there(nothing over a level 2) There is a place I know about 2/3 of the way to Ft.Mac that you can quad in some gas, but I usually just bring some down in the winter if I'm going. It's take's a good 3-4 day's to take everything, in including the sites at the pelican hilton(old homestead and one of the first ever wooden derriks for drilling) Here are a few more pics.......

These cabins are a five minute boat ride to the GRAND and are owned by a a couple of good friends....

In case you forgot how MASSIVE they are from the air.....
They drop 100' over the whole stretch of the rapids and are louds as hell!

OE field trip next year? Definetly do-able and I can show you guy's what I know about the area. It really is amazing!!
You can hit the same rocks I do on the way down.... Embarassed

Only if your crazy Shocked . I'm pretty sure their impossible to navigate on either side. There is a old set of railway tracks on that island which they used to transport shit down to Fort Mac.(portage for the educated folk) I work with a guy that was born on the Pelican settelment(old Native Fellow) and he's told me a few stories of some guy's from the army that went through there with raft's. They all lived, but lost most of there gear and said "never again". It's really one of those things you have to see in person to understand the magnatuide of them!!!

It's definetly "Do-able" from Mac, but I've heard some people say that the water is vicious. I know some buddy's that went up on Sea-doo's with a experianced boater guiding them. They said never again. It was fun, but the said the wave's/rapids were so big you couldn't see the guy 10' in front of you! There is 11 set's of rapids that way which include some pretty steep cascade's.(saw some pics). It's 90miles up and the rapids range from I to a IV. The one guy I go with(yellow Kenferm) was in Mac with a boat and ventured up the Atha'b to the first or second cascade and told me he wouldn't want to make that a trip.....but don't get me wrong, it can be done. I'd love to say I covered every mile of the River from Jasper park to Lake Athabasca one day.

I fly over the Athabasca every week and from the Grand Rapids down there are lots of ledges that go the full length across the river. From what I can tell right now might not be much fun going up river.
